You Have To Work For What You Want!

I will never forget the very first time I DECIDED that I wanted to succeed in Network Marketing/Direct Sales.

Here is the exact strategy I used to create some success for myself in a company I was involved in. I call it “my taste of success” and it was a great ride. Here is how I became a Diamond Leader:

1. I joined during pre-launch. Now this is NOT necessary because anybody can join a company at any time and make it to the top if they put forth the effort.

2. I contacted everybody I had info for that I wanted to work with about it.

3. I then e-mailed everybody I had an e-mail address for about it.

4. I posted about it in all of the online groups I belonged to.

5. I created a beautiful lead capture page and bought Google ad space linking it to my lead capture page.

6. I placed inexpensive ads on a few work from home sites.

7. I wrote a few free press releases with a link leading back to my lead capture page and threw up a few YouTube videos.

8. I followed up with everybody who responded…by phone, e-mail and even faxed people to help close them into the new business. I also hosted a successful launch party with my local team members when the time came and many people even called me about joining from info they found. My team grew nationwide, I conducted home parties, hosted and attended company events and I became a Diamond Leader with that company within a year of joining it.

Although things did not work out well with that company, my hard work paid off as a good learning experience. See, when you want something bad enough, you WILL work for it. It takes time and effort, but the end result is well worth the personal growth that stems from it.

Yes indeed folks, you have to do the work. Too many people in this industry sit around and do nothing or do so little that the results are miniscule compared to the results other people get by putting in the work. This is not a lottery, nor is it a job, BUT it IS work. Either you do the work or you remain part of the 97% who fail in this industry. My suggestion to you is if you are a part of that 97% group currently failing to grasp what this industry can truly do for you and your family, get off your butt right now, get busy in your business and JUST DO IT!

The Humble Leader

Be the Humble Leader others will want to followRecently a woman I work with who knows about my business and knows me personally brought me into one of the conference rooms during a break to speak with me. She asked me why I am always edifying other people. She said she wanted to talk to me about me. She felt that I was an intelligent and talented woman while also asking me why was I working a job that was way beneath my skill set. She also mentioned that I was way too humble. She told me that I should celebrate the gifts that God gave me.

Well, I am here to say that she made my day. Although I do get compliments from time to time, it was nice that someone took the time out to actually sit me down and talk to me personally about this. It brought me to reflect on the topic of leadership. See, I have never been one to brag on myself, actually I prefer to brag about others and their accomplishments. I do mention my achievements and how happy I am when my goals are reached, but an all out “Me Me Me Me Me, look at what I did, don’t you wish you were me” session is NOT a part of my personality.

I also RESIST what modern society promotes which is “the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the showy display of one’s means of life.” (1 John 2:16). So while I may be doing well in business, I will not be bragging about, or posting pictures all over the web of present or future “material shine”, sort of speak. I am in no position to ever think that I am better than someone else, neither in word nor in deed. I will always remain humble.

In leadership, I feel that being a humble leader equals long term gain, better business relationships and a balanced team environment. I found the article below to be a great read and I wanted to share it with you all, especially those in the Network Marketing industry and other business related industries where a team environment exists.

You want to know one of the secrets to great leadership? It’s balancing self-confidence and humility. Obviously, you need to have talent to be a great leader – that’s a given. You need to have the experience, drive, and opportunity to make big things happen. And then, every leader needs to carry him or herself with a certain degree of confidence (otherwise, others will quickly lose faith). But a lot of leaders go off the rails because they can’t control their confidence – it’s so off the charts that it becomes a liability, as it turns into arrogance, greed or recklessness. You have to balance self-confidence with humility. You have to remember that you don’t have all the answers, and even if you did, you shouldn’t act like you do. Nobody likes to work for someone who projects that kind of arrogance.

So how do you develop humility? First, you simply have to ask others for their opinion, and then, you have to listen to what they have to say. Let me repeat that – great leaders seek answers from those around them. They never fail to gather opinions and suggestions from trusted advisors. Ask yourself – “do I regularly ask others for their thoughts on matters of strategy, planning, or operations, and do I factor those opinions into my final decisions?” If they answer is yes, great – you’re being an inclusive leader. If the answer is no, well, this just in – your people don’t enjoy working for you. Yes, that’s right – this one behavior (“I know best and will make all decisions unilaterally”) guarantees you a spot in the ABHOF – the Awful Boss Hall of Fame. Think back to a time when you worked for a manager who never asked for your opinion, and made all of the decisions without including you or your peers. Have a lot of good times with that boss, did you? Of course not. So if this sounds like you, the first thing you have to do is to ask others for their best thinking – early and often. Make this a permanent part of your leadership – it’s actually very easy to do. Every time a major decision come along (don’t worry, you’ll recognize them), ask a few peers or direct reports one or more of the following questions: “How would you assess the risks here?” “What pros and cons do you see in this situation?” “How can we best leverage this situation?’ “What are some of the implications of not making this decision?” Simply put, if a decision or action is required, seek some input. Not hard to remember, and not hard to do.

The definition of humility is “the quality or condition of being humble; of having a modest opinion or estimate of one’s own importance, rank, etc.” That’s really it, isn’t it? Humble leaders don’t think of themselves as being any more important than anyone else in the organization. In fact, they see themselves more as the conductor of the orchestra; they’re not making any of the actual music, that work is being done by the other members of the team. You want to take your leadership to the next level? Add a dash of humility to your skill set – you’ll certainly notice the difference. And then, pay attention to how others are responding to you – trust me, they’ll appreciate it.
